In some corners, Ms. Placas’s position at the magazine seemed to counter Essence Communications’ mission to be a powerful voice for black women. Many said she couldn’t adequately perform her duties because she lacked an authentic understanding of the black female experience. Angela Burt-Murray, then the editor in chief, released a statement defending Ms. Placas’s hiring before Constance White stepped in as the head of the magazine in March 2011.
